Ditching Resolutions This Year

New year, new me right? Learn Spanish. Cook dinner every night. Lose 10 pounds. Get ready everyday. Travel around the world. Did you know 4/5 people break their new years resolutions? And a third of resolutions don’t even make it past the first month?

I have been setting resolutions since I was a teenager. Last year I am DITCHED resolutions. Because resolutions focus on the outcome, not the journey. In the past I’ve started the year with a list of habits to break and make all at once in every category of my life. Cook dinner every night. Read one book every month. Work out three times a week. Lose 10 pounds. Each of these goals require effort, discipline, new habits. Adding them all at once is near impossible and very overwhelming.

Don’t get me wrong I am a HUGE believer in goal setting. I set new revenue goals every quarter. And I am working on all sorts of new habits, and adding to them each month. I look at my vision board filled with my goals multiple times a day. With resolutions our list for change is too long. And we are creating them at the beginning of the year because it’s what you do…not because we have a strong desire for change.

I found this on a wellness blog called Thrive: “A resolution is, more or less, a statement to change something you want to fix about yourself or your lifestyle. As a result, resolutions tend to inspire negative thoughts about your current situation.”

“On the other hand, an intention is more focused on creating abundance in your life. An intention does not imply something is wrong with the way you currently live, but instead it motivates you to live even better.”

Last year, my intention was to HEAL, which seems ironic now with 2020 being the dumpster fire year that it was.

I set the intention to heal and then I worked towards it everyday. With my journal. Through therapy. Through Coaching. Through hard conversations. For example:

January 8, 2020: I’m so angry, I wake up all night tossing and turning with anger. I’m fuming. I’m disgusted.

Then there were lots of ups and downs. Like LOTS because…2020.

November 1, 2020: Wow. What a year. But we made it. Survived. Thrived even. Let go and processed so much hurt. Pain. Uncomfortable feelings. Hard conversations x 100,000,000. Tightened by inner circle. Balanced my heart and life. Life is good. Hard times come and go. Now I know we can get through anything. Grateful.

It was hard work. But. We did it. My heart feels so much better going to a new year after feeling whole again.

I would LOVE to see what intention you choose for the new year. Post your intention for 2021 and tag me @kyleeannstudios!
