Janelle is the owner of Janelle Joy Private Editing. Along with her team, she runs a business doing private editing for photographers all over the world. She is building her own empire in the editing world! I loved chatting with Janelle because even though we didn’t know each other at all, our journeys are so similar. Not only did she share her story of growth, but how to grow your own team AND tips for entrepreneurs getting started, too.
She started her business as a hobby and built it into an empire!
“My journey started with my oldest was two and we had a friend of ours take pictures of our family. This is when photography was kind of at that cusp of taking off. This was before it exploded in our photography industry. So, she took pictures and I was blown away. The pictures were amazing.I just loved, loved, loved it. I instantly fell in love with photography and I said, I have to do this. I knew if I wanted to do this it had to be a business to pay for my hobby.”
“I did that for about 14 years before I pivoted in 2016 as a private photo editor and then bringing on the team that I have now. Its been a huge journey. Now I’m speaking at large conferences all over the nation. I’m doing podcasts, I’m offering mentoring, I’m doing education. I have courses. But, it came in a sequence of events and it didn’t just all happen at one time. It was a long journey to get to where I’m at.”
On the podcast she elaborates more on how she built her business and why she shifted.
We both started from a hobby and then just kind of gradually built up into these businesses that of took us places.
“Allow God to have that bigger picture for you and trust in it. He has been very intense, intentional in my business. I never had the big picture – He had a much bigger picture for me, and I knew that I just needed to trust in His bigger picture and in His timing too. Back when I started this, it wasn’t the timing for me to have a team. It wasn’t the timing for me to have an educational series, and be speaking. Now it is. Just trust in God & His bigger vision. Timing is everything.”
We both believe that God led our businesses to where they are, and are so grateful for his guidance along the way.
Build a team around your needs, your business needs, and your client’s needs.
As she has grown her one woman show into a full team, she has learned a lot along the way.
“You’ve got to have great systems in place before you can bring on a team. If you’re thinking of building a team, make sure that you’re like in place to do so. And if you are, make sure you build it right, and you really figure out what you need for your business.”
And her advice to any and all entrepreneurs is:
“Do not fall into the comparison trap. That is like the biggest black hole you could get into. Gain your inspiration from the right people, but then put your blinders on and do you. Don’t be afraid of making mistakes cause you’re going to make them, I still make them all the time. Have fun with it too. Don’t let it keep you up at night constantly.”
