These light filled product photos were an opportunity for me to show a lot of creativity in a session. Often I do photo sessions in one day with 10-40 products, I think a few times I may have had as many as 60. It was somewhat refreshing to show up to the studio and have just one product to photograph for SALT Gathering.
As I looked through the beautiful artwork, the thought that Jesus is the Light of the World kept coming to my mind. I had gotten to the studio early that day and noticed the incredible light and sun spots coming through the windows. The thought came to me that I wanted those photos filled with light. I couldn’t help but add sun spots in a lot of my flat lays. I intentionally had one sliver of light go directly onto Christ’s face in the cover photo because He is the light.
I was also able to add variety to the gallery with different light and shadow, as well as by taking photos of each page. I added some kind of greenery or dried flower depending on what went well with that month of the year and the colors of the artwork. Every prop in the flat lay was intentionally put there to keep an organic feel while at the same time keeping the art as the star of the show.
Adding in a model was a way to add more depth to the gallery. She was dressed in soft neutral colors that complimented the colors of the calendar. I put her in a home setting in order to show how the product might be used in real life. There were a few of her hanging the calendar on the wall and a few of her sitting just flipping through the pages.
