Without this guy the world would be a much duller place for so many reasons, but today I want to share how he changed my life.
Social Butterfly 🦋
Bryden was a pretty social guy back in the day. He would stop strangers on the street to ask if they had a dog. Anytime we were at his home without parents he wanted me to dial his friends. We would go down the phone list and talk to every single one of them. He loved to be in the middle of the team huddle. And it didn’t matter what team or sport or if he was even invited. Bry was the last one to leave a stake dance. We had to drag him out most of the time with lots of huffs and puffs. And he loved to wrestle.
Basically everyone wanted to be his friend. Including Lucas Maughan. In middle school, Luke and Bry were best friends. There was a whole group of boys (and Shonnee) that doted on him. They took him bowling, let him sing his heart out to their music and loved to eat pizza together. (They still do)
900 Miles + 4 Blown Tires
Luke and his friends kept in touch with Bry when Bry had to move to Washington to stay alive. Luke was called to serve in Ukraine but left from the MTC with medical problems. In between that mission and his re-call state side, he came to visit Bryden in Washington with a group of their friends.
Any man that drives 900 miles across a few states to visit my Uncle B is a friend of mine. When they arrived, I was in a shirt and tie + holding hands with my boyfriend on my grandma’s couch. Luke had a girlfriend as well. Plus he was 19..and I was 16. But I fell hard.
A 16 Year Old’s Journal Entry
April 2009. When I wrote in my journal that weekend, I wrote: I want to marry someone exactly like Luke Maughan.
And then his Second Mission
He left on his second mission to Colorado after living down the road with my grandparents the rest of that summer. He came home unexpectedly (and honorably) my first week of college. I broke up with the guy I was sorta dating via text and waited at the bottom of the SLC escalator with Welcome Home Signs.
Two months later we were engaged and married seven months later. 😳
There were a lot of ups and downs (99% on Luke’s part) for us to cross paths and meet, but it wouldn’t have been anything without our matchmaker.
And here we are. I’m in Washington celebrating Bry’s first bday without his Pa (grandpa) and Luke will be here tomorrow to join us.
