I believe that micro changes in your business can have macro results! One of the biggest micro changes I have made in my business in recent history is the way that I dress for weddings! I get a lot of comments from family members at weddings and helps me come off as an expert in the wedding industry. Whether you desire to blend in with the guests or stand out as a vendor, there are lots of things to consider!!
I did quite a bit of shopping to narrow into how I wanted to represent myself. I ended up deciding that I wanted to dress as well as a guest attending the wedding would, but also wear clothes that are flattering to my body.
Here are some tips that led me to my perfect photographer’s uniform:
Your uniform is the first impression about your brand.
What do you want your uniform to say about you? Matching your uniform to your brand is super important! Is your brand laid-back and carefree? A jumpsuit and flip flops might work for you. Is your brand high end and elegant? A dress from Sexy Modest or Banana Republic would better represent those values. In general, it is advisable to make sure to make clothing choices that aren’t distracting. A few seasons ago, I used to wear black faded jeans, a blouse and sandals to weddings and couldn’t figure out why I wasn’t being taken seriously by family members at weddings. Now I wear nice skirts and blouses and receive a lot of trust from family members!
Figure out what works with your gear.
Do you wear a neck strap with your camera? You probably want to skip necklaces? Do you wear your camera on a crossbody sling? Maybe you want to skip the blazer. Do you wear a camera backpack while you shoot? Make sure you don’t overheat and sweat (totally me!). These are all things to consider when crafting your uniform. Since I wear a hip belt to carry my camera, my options were more limited. Because of wearing this belt, I can’t wear dresses that have a waist line that doesn’t line up with the belt. Finding high waisted pencil skirts allow me to feel covered, classy and have my shirt hang over to cover the belt.
Plan your uniform and stock up.
Once I shopped around, tested a few outfits at weddings and found what worked for me, I made sure to stock up!! I have around 5-6 shooting skirts and 3-4 shooting shirts. The more the merrier so that you aren’t scrambling to wash your uniform every wedding day.

What to wear and when?
Personally, I think the first impression with my couples is very important. When my couples come to our studio for our meeting, I make sure to dress up a little more, including nice jeans, booties, nice shirt and hair and makeup done. At sessions I dress a little bit more down from that first impression since I am outside and working. Then I make sure to dress up the best at the wedding day! I have personally made the choice to never wear sweat pants in front of my couples! Also, make sure to have a plan of what to wear for inclement weather or cold seasons! Fleece tights and sweats are perfect for spring and fall!
Find and wear comfy shoes!
Shooting long days while wearing poor shoes can make your body break down quickly. Spend some time and money investing in the correct shoes for you and your feet! Be sure to avoid heels and make sure to break shoes in before wearing them to a wedding. Here are some ideas:
