Mackenzie and Zack Engagements | Photographers Cache Valley

Kenzie lived below Zack in Pineview housing near Logan Campus. One night he heard some noise out in the hallway and wandered up to see the commotion. He ended up meeting Kenzie and chatting with the group for a few hours. Through the semester, their roommates became best friends. After a couple months of lots of bowling, late night dance parties, lots of hanging out, star gazing, and flirting, they eventually told each other they liked each other! Zack told their proposal story better than I could!! Forewarning, its the cutest ever, with only a little bit of disaster!!

Dress: Roolee

Hello, this is Zack. On Tuesday (5/2/17), I found out that the ring was ready, so I called her and asked her if she wanted to go to dinner and feed ducks the next day, since we were done with finals PLUS she wasn’t expecting the ring to be ready for another week or so (and neither was I). She said yes, so I let the planning begin.

I talked to my roommate and her roommates and told them to meet me at first dam on Wednesday after I got off work at 8. When we got there, I gave them a GIANT box of Christmas lights and tea lights and like 45 pictures of the two of us and explained to them my plan, which was to have those strung all over the dock for when we showed up.
I then went to the store and picked up roses, which I then placed in the trunk. (The roses being in the trunk is a key part to the story.)

Meanwhile, Kenz thinks we’re going to feed ducks after dinner, so when I picked her up for dinner, I opened her door and she got in the car, and then I put the bread for the ducks in the trunk.

So we go to dinner and all is well. JK I ate nothing. I was so nervous about everything going exactly according to plan that I couldn’t eat. 20 minutes into us being in the restaurant I get a text from BJ, my roommate saying, “THIS IS NOT A DRILL. CALL ME!” So I went to the bathroom and called him from the stall and he said something along the lines of, “So we got the lights up and everything looked great and we said, ‘Let’s do one more strand….’ and we blew the fuse to the park… so the lights don’t work anymore. We can make Plan B work, but we need you to stall.”

“How long?” I asked.

“Like 45 minutes,” he said.

So I went back to the table, and we sat there for a while. We took our food home and we put it in the fridge, we drove around town for a bit, and then stopped at the temple at sat there for like 20 minutes. (Side note: It was a huge temptation to just pull the ring out and propose right there at the temple, but the roommates had put in over 2 hours of work by this point that I wanted it to worth it for them.) Finally we got back in the car and headed to first dam.

When we got there, they had lined the entire dock with the little, electronic tea lights that have the switch on the bottom. It was super pretty. I park the car and Kenzie says,
“Awwww, that’s super cute! My friend got engaged here yesterday!”

I just laughed and tried to remain chill even though my heart was pumping super hard and my mind was racing super fast.
We got out of the car and instead of pulling out the bread from the trunk I handed her the roses, to which she replied, “That’s not bread…”. I grabbed her by the hand and headed towards the dock, all the while Kenz keeps repeating, “That’s not bread…” at least 5 times.

So we’re walking up the dock, there’s pictures of the two of us all over and the lights are super cute and everything’s going great…. until I hear footsteps behind us. My thoughts immediately assume it’s her roommate that I had asked to take pictures, just not being very quiet…. until I heard lots of laughing and turned around to see a very old Mexican man with a fishing pole walking up the dock right behind us as his little grandson was following him yelling in Spanish, “No Papi, we can’t be here! You need to come back! Stop! Stop!” But either the old man was ignoring him or was legitimately focused on the fishing that he was about to have at first dam at 9:45 at night that he couldn’t hear the kid.

“Of course this would happen,” I thought. I told Kenz to hold on one second, and went over to the man and said, in Spanish, “Sir, can you leave?”

“Huh?” he replied, shocked, as he finally focused on something other than the fish he was about to catch. (Side note: This is the same reaction most scrawny, white, fluent Spanish speakers get from old Mexican men.)

“Can you please leave?”

“You want me to leave?” He asked.

“I do. I really really do want you to leave right now.” I replied.

“Ummmmm sure…” and he left, quickly followed by his grandson and lots of laughter from his family, our roommates, and Kenzie.

So we waited a little bit and looked at all the pictures and then I knelt down and asked her to marry me.

SHE SAID YES!!!

Kenzie is the greatest thing to ever happen to me and I’m so stoked to spend eternity with her. July 29th feels SO far away, but its coming quicker than we could imagine.
