Teaching has always been a passion of mine. I spent my childhood summers tutoring my siblings, playing “teacher” and even skipped recess in Elementary School to be a peer tutor. When I started at Utah State University, I was set on Elementary and Special Education. Life changed..a lot, so I ended up switching my degree and starting my photography business, but my love for teaching never went away. After I graduated from USU, I got a job teaching the Intro to Digital Photography class at Bridgerland Applied Technical College. I loved it. I started mentoring a lot and posting weekly PhotogBlog posts on my blog with tips and advice for photographers. I loved the way sharing connected me with the other sharing-types. I found a place in this industry that I loved so that’s when I decided to put together one big workshop…the Kylee Ann Fall Workshop!
Teaching a photography workshop is scary. Despite the many requests I’ve received from photographers all over the nation…and even world to share my secrets, there are still so many doubts, what-ifs and crazy nerves. Saturday morning finally came after a ton of Friday-night nightmares and my car was dead! AH! My sweet, patient husband got himself and Brody dressed as fast as he could and drove me into town. I got to the Thatcher-Young Mansion first, with food in hand and everything totally in place. Then, the ladies started showing up and I knew that everything was going to be okay.
FROM ME:
I absolutely loved all the subjects I got to share with this group of 18 already-talented and amazing ladies. We started the day with PHOTOGRAPHY – composition, lighting, posing, equipment and settings. Then, we had our incredible fall styled shoot put together by an amazing team of local vendors. Unfortunately these ladies were my guinea pigs and we learned the hard way that we needed about three more styled shoots going on at the same time for the amount of photographers. It was squishy… Next time there will be less photographers and more models! (Sorry ladies!) Fortunately, everyone was still able to get gorgeous shots of our models and details.
After lunch, we came back and talked about POST-PROCESSING in Lightroom – editing, presets and syncing. Then, we moved into BRANDING – consistency, finding your style and marketing to your target market. I loved talking briefly about marketing ideas through social media, websites and blogs! It’s probably my favorite subject to discuss with photographers. The last part of the day was BUSINESS – business plans, taxes, getting legal and other tips. Boring, a little overwhelming, but a much needed photography subject! We ended the day with a giveaway and Q&As then said goodbye to 18 new (and a few old) friends! I had SOOO much fun the entire time (and I think everyone else did too.) It was definitely a success and I am SO excited to do it again and again!
