When I started photography three years ago, I was a BIG TIME blog stalker. I would scroll through local photographers blogs from tab to tab for hours. I always came to a tab called “What’s In My Bag?” I didn’t know what half the lists consisted of at the time, but I remember writing them down on my wish list.

Recently I announced my switch from Nikon to Canon. It freaked a bunch of people out. I got a ton of messages from newbies to pros questioning their choice in Nikon or wondering if they should switch to. I want to tell you that what’s in my bag doesn’t matter the way you think it does.

RULE #1

The equipment you own doesn’t make you a better photographer. YOU DO!!!

RULE #2

Professional photography equipment does not matter because it doesn’t make you a professional photographer. Becoming a professional photographer take time, lots of education, patience, etc. Professional equipment provides you with more control and better quality, but means nothing if you don’t know how to use it.

RULE #3

Along those lines, amateur equipment doesn’t mean you’re a bad photographer. If you’re a great photographer, you’re a great photographer with any camera.  (Obviously with time to learn the camera since each one is different.) The equipment you use doesn’t make the picture; it just enhances it.

“So you’re saying that I don’t need professional equipment?”

My answer for that would be when you feel limited with your current camera settings, features and size then you should upgrade your equipment. Learning photography takes time, practice and lots of education. Learn your camera (no matter what kind of camera) inside and out. Become the photographer you want to be with the equipment you currently have.

Whats in my bag is constantly changing so first I will let you know what is always in my bag regardless of the brand: 2 DSLR Bodies, Wide Angle Lens, Portrait Lens, Telephoto Lens, Macro Lens, Flash Equipment and lots Memory Cards.
