Birth Story | Part 2….The Hospital Stay
It was about 2:00 AM on October 12th when everything started settling down. Piper had been weighed and measured. I had been stitched, cleaned up and finally got some crackers and juice. And most importantly, Luke had the color back in his face. (haha!) We all three snuggled up in my delivery bed for the first time. Piper was instantly eating like a champ from moments after delivery. It was pure perfection snuggling up with our sweet daughter. After a little while, they transferred us to recovery, gave me some real food and got us all settled. By then it was around 3:00 AM.
We gave Piper her first bath when we got to our room. After her bath, we her to the nursery for a few minutes to get warmed up. She came back about 20 minutes later with the cutest bow and hair do! I about died with how cute she was in her little bassinet.
The next day was busy with lots of nurse checks, trying to sleep and getting ready to meet Brody. It’s really hard to recover from having a baby in the middle of the night. We accumulated about 4 hours total in 20 minute chunks in that first 20 hours. It was an exhausting day. I just couldn’t stop staring at my little princess.
She has my long skinny feet, with the big gap between the first two toes and my nose. We also see a lot of Luke and Brody in her.
Luke went home in the morning to get ready. Brody had his first big sleepover at Aunt Barbi’s with Ava. He loved it. Before Luke came back with Brody, he dropped off Brody’s present from Piper. Brody came in with a doll for Piper and just set it on my bed without even looking up. I told him to look and he turned and saw her for the first time. He said “Hi…Pipert.” He gave her a big kiss then sat down with me on the bed. He held her, snuggled her, kissed her all over, offered her snacks and just loved on her.
Piper got Brody a cool new toy and gummy bears. He was so excited to share his gummy bears with Piper. He pretty much loved sharing everything except his daddy. When Luke first took Piper he yelled “no, Brody’s daddy.” He made him “give Pipert back to mom right now.” After a few minutes we tried again. Brody helped Luke swaddle, brought Piper her nose syringe and a bow for her hair and gave her lots more kisses and cuddles. He’s already a natural big brother! We loved snugglin’ our girl.
After Luke and Brody left, we snuggled most of the day. Barbi, Sydney, Lisa, Flint, Bruce, Austin, Sierra, Honey, Tracy, Tina, Lauren and Kellie all came for a visit throughout the afternoon and next morning. Besides being totally exhausted, my recovery was pretty great. I feel 100 times better than I did with Brody!
During the second night, we got a lot more sleep! Luke went home with Brody and Piper and I snuggled up in my hospital bed. In the middle of the night, I sent her to the nursery for a few hours to get a solid chunk of sleep. We probably got between 7-8 hours if you add all the little chunks together. Getting Piper dressed for the first time in the morning was sooo much fun. I seriously can’t believe how much fun dressing a girl is! She looked so cute in her Cheetah print and headband!
Luke came just in time to finish all the fun discharge paperwork and hold Piper for my quick shower. Then, we buckled up our teeny tiny girl in her big car seat and were released from the hospital. We picked up Brody from Aunt Barbi’s and then we were a family of four. Crazzzy!
Brody loved on his sister allllll day long. He wanted to hold her, kiss her, cuddle her, bring her toys, pat her back and make sure she was watching his every move.
I’m soo sad I don’t have pictures, but Aunt Barbi came to visit and brought us Cafe Rio for dinner. She has been the BEST help this week with everything! After Barbi left, aunt Kayla came and visited us. Then we started getting everyone ready for bed and the house ready for my mom and Brooklyn’s middle of the night arrival.
Brooklyn and Mom pulled into town at around 11:30 PM after 12.25 hours in the car (record time). Brooklyn crashed on the couch and my mom was pretty much up all night cuddling with Piper. At 8:00 this morning, I woke up to Grandma with soggy Brody and ready-to-eat Piper. Grandmas are seriously the best thing in the entire world. Brody is pretty obsessed and Piper will be soon too. I am so so happy she is here for a full week with us.
