Downtown Salt Lake Family Photographer: How to Prepare for Your Extended Family Photo Session

Recently, I had the joy of being a downtown Salt Lake Family Photographer for the Wilcox family during their annual tradition of updating family photos. Amy is my husband’s Aunt, and it was such a pleasure to photograph these darling cousins, babies, and the entire Wilcox family – I sure love them! Sessions like these are a reminder of how special it is to capture the connections that make a family unique. If you’re planning your own extended family session, here’s how to make sure it’s fun, relaxed, and full of moments you’ll treasure forever.

Coordinate Without Overthinking

Gone are the days of everyone wearing identical white shirts and jeans. Instead, choose 3-4 complementary colors and let everyone’s personality shine! Think cozy neutrals with pops of color or soft tones that go well together.

Timing is Everything

Lighting makes all the difference, so aim for golden hour—right after sunrise or before sunset. It’s soft, warm, and super flattering. Most often, we like to photograph families 90-60 minutes before sunset!

Keep the Kids Happy (and the Grown-Ups Too!)

Snacks, water, and a favorite toy can work wonders for little ones. For grandparents, make sure there’s a spot to sit or take breaks. Comfort equals happy faces—and happy faces make the best photos! Remember, I am a master at chaos and efficiency – as a mom of toddlers, I know it can be tricky to keep everyone’s attention.  Let me worry about getting those smiles!

Focus on Fun, Not Perfect

Let go of the pressure for perfection. Some of the best moments come from candid laughs, tickle fights, or a toddler being delightfully unpredictable. Trust me—those are the photos you’ll treasure most!
