There’s just something about Lake Overlook extended family photography that feels extra special. Maybe it’s the view, maybe it’s the mountain air—but when Kim and her sweet family gathered for this session during their Bear Lake vacation, it was absolute magic.

Kim and her husband brought their whole crew together for a family reunion in one of Utah’s most scenic locations. They have four kids—one already married and one getting married this winter—so this session felt like the perfect moment to pause and preserve this chapter before even more changes come.

As we hiked out to the overlook, the wildflowers were in bloom, the aspens were gently swaying, and the lake sparkled in the distance. It was one of those dreamy evenings where everything aligned: the golden hour light, the laughter echoing across the hills, and the love you could feel in every hug and smile.

My Favorite Part of Extended Family Shoots

What I love most about extended family sessions like this is the chance to tell a whole family story in one shoot. We made time for every grouping: grandparents with grandkids, siblings laughing together, and each family unit snuggled close. We also made sure to grab those once-in-a-lifetime full group shots that become heirlooms in frames and albums for years to come.

Kim’s family was such a joy to work with—laid-back, kind, and so connected to one another. Even with wedding planning and life’s busy schedules, they carved out this time together, and I think that’s what made it so meaningful. These are the photos they’ll look back on when the kids are older and the family has grown even more.
