Bringing a baby into this world is a big deal. It is a time filled with such strong emotions for everyone involved. It is a time filled with wonder and anticipation, and can also be a time for fear and uncertainty. But it is always a time for cheer, congratulations and celebration. The Loftus Birth Story was no different. Watching Alycia experience these emotions, along with the pain of childbirth, was such an amazing experience. She is full of grace and strength. A natural born birth goddess.
I got to her house at 8pm. She was in active labor but proceeded to give me a full house tour. She was gracious to her kids while putting them to bed. The rest of the evening, her temperament did not change, despite being in active labor. She worked on her computer, bounced on a ball, and finally laid down to rest before the midwife came to check in.
Her midwife didn’t believe she was in active labor, and told the assistant not to come. She was having contractions every few minutes, but managed to talk through them. It was amazing! She never stalled telling stories, asking questions, laughing and talking. (I felt like I was at a sleepover with a friend).
When she felt ready, she got into the water bath. The midwife called the assistant and they waited for a few hours. Still she talked, laughed and took small rests. She talked to me up until a minute before the baby came.
After she started to push, it was only a few minutes before baby arrived. It was the wildest most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen. I couldn’t help but laugh when I saw Gabe’s face – he reminded me so much of Luke.
She delivered at 4:30. I stayed until about 6 to get all the precious first moment. It was so beautiful. And so was ever moment that followed the birth.
