One of the biggest questions I get from families planning sessions is where to take beach photos without fighting huge crowds, harsh light, or tiny strips of usable sand. Thankfully, there are still several amazing spots for the best beach locations for family photos in San Diego that photograph beautifully without feeling chaotic.
Every beach in San Diego has a different personality, and honestly, choosing the right location can completely change the feel of your gallery. Some beaches feel bright and airy. Others feel textured and dramatic. Some work best for playful family sessions, while others lean more clean and editorial.
These are my go-to beaches that consistently photograph well and give families a more relaxed experience overall.

Best Beach Locations for Family Photos in San Diego for a Clean, Timeless Look
Coronado is one of my all-time favorite locations for family sessions. It gives such a clean, classic Southern California feel without looking overly busy in photos.
The sand here is lighter and reflects sunlight beautifully, which helps create that bright, glowy skin tone everyone loves in beach photos. The sunsets also fall slightly north at Coronado, so the lighting tends to stay softer and more even during session times.
I also love the subtle texture from sea plants and dunes because it adds visual interest while still keeping the gallery minimal and timeless. Families who want that soft “luxury resort” feel usually end up loving Coronado.
Del Mar family photos with more variety and easier access
Del Mar is another favorite because it gives us so much variety without needing multiple locations. You get cliffs, textured sand, softer grassy areas, and more usable beach space overall.
That extra room matters more than people realize, especially during high tide. Some beaches become incredibly cramped at sunset, but Del Mar usually gives us enough space to move around comfortably and avoid crowded backgrounds.
It’s also centrally located for families staying anywhere around North County San Diego, Encinitas, Carlsbad, or La Jolla.
For families with young kids, easier parking and shorter walks make a huge difference too. Del Mar tends to be one of the more stress-free options while still giving gorgeous results.

Why Scripps Pier works so well for family sessions
Scripps Pier at La Jolla Shores gives a completely different look from Coronado or Del Mar, which is why I love it so much. The pier creates structure and framing that instantly makes galleries feel more dynamic and artistic.
We can capture wide-open beach portraits and then move underneath the pier for moodier, more dimensional images. That combination helps galleries feel polished and full without needing outfit changes or multiple beaches.
Sunset at Scripps Pier is also consistently beautiful. The light filters through the pier in such a dreamy way during golden hour.
I photograph families throughout San Diego, Del Mar, Encinitas, Carlsbad, and La Jolla, and these beaches continue to be my most requested locations for a reason. They each photograph differently, but all three consistently create clean, timeless family portraits.
