Some photography sessions carry a little extra meaning, and the Coy family’s shoot was one of those moments. This Opal and Light Studio Farr West family mini session brought together years of friendship, a brand new baby, and a cozy studio setting that perfectly matched the sweet stage of life this family is in.
Ali and I go way back. We spent nearly a decade playing softball together growing up, so seeing her step into motherhood has been incredibly special. We reconnected last year when she reached out for her pregnancy announcement photos. When she contacted me again to schedule a mini session after her baby arrived, I felt so honored to document this next chapter for her family.
Watching friends grow into new seasons of life is one of the best parts of being a photographer. It adds a layer of connection and emotion to the entire experience, and this session was full of both.

Why Families Love an Opal and Light Studio Farr West Family Mini Session
This shoot took place at Opal and Light Studio in Farr West, which has quickly become one of my clients’ favorite locations. The studio has a soft, cozy aesthetic that feels warm and welcoming from the moment you walk in. Its cottage-core inspired design creates a timeless backdrop that works beautifully for family sessions.
Studio sessions offer several advantages, especially for families with young babies. The controlled environment keeps everyone comfortable and removes the stress of weather or outdoor conditions. Soft natural light fills the space, giving photos that airy and relaxed feeling clients love.
Families often choose studio sessions because they provide:
-
Consistent natural lighting throughout the session
-
A warm, comfortable space for parents and babies
-
Neutral, timeless backdrops that keep the focus on connection
-
A cozy atmosphere that helps everyone relax quickly
-
Beautiful textures and décor that elevate the final images
The Opal and Light Studio setting gave the Coy family the perfect environment to simply snuggle their baby and enjoy the moment together.

A Dress Mishap and a Neighborhood That Came Through
This session almost looked very different thanks to a last-minute wardrobe surprise. Ali ordered a dress online for the shoot, but when the package arrived just a few days before our session, it was completely the wrong color. Instead of coordinating with her husband and baby’s outfits, it clashed entirely.
Moments like that can feel stressful when you’re already juggling life with a newborn. Thankfully, Ali reached out so we could solve the problem together.
I quickly turned to the women in my neighborhood for help, and the response was incredible. One neighbor even dropped off ten different dresses for Ali to try on before the shoot. Their kindness made all the difference. Not only did we find a beautiful option for the session, but Ali walked into the studio feeling confident and cared for.
Moments like this remind me how powerful community can be.
Capturing a Sweet Season of Life
Once we arrived at the studio, everything fell perfectly into place. The cozy textures and warm light of Opal and Light Studio created the perfect atmosphere for a relaxed family session.
Ali and her husband focused on loving their new baby, and the camera simply documented those real moments. Their little one snuggled close, tiny fingers wrapped around mom and dad, while soft laughter filled the room.
These are the kinds of images families treasure for years. The newborn stage changes quickly, but photographs like these allow parents to remember exactly how it felt to hold their baby close during those early days.
It was incredibly meaningful to document this milestone for someone I’ve known for so many years. Seeing Ali step into motherhood and watching her family grow was a full-circle moment I will always cherish.
