Family Photos at Home vs. Outdoors: Which Is Right for You?

Family Photos at Home vs. Outdoors

When you’re planning family photos, one of the first decisions you’ll make is where to take them.

Do you want to stay home and document your family in the place where everyday life happens? Or do you want to get everyone outside for beautiful scenery and a little adventure?

As a San Diego family photographer, I love both. The best choice really comes down to what you want your photos to feel like.

Family Photos at Home

In-home family photos are personal in a way that outdoor sessions simply can’t replicate.

Your home is where your kids grow up. It’s where they play, read books, eat breakfast, snuggle on the couch, and make the little memories you may not realize you’ll miss someday.

An in-home session can be especially meaningful for families with:

  • A new baby
  • Young kids who feel most comfortable at home
  • A family who wants very personal, everyday photos
  • Special rooms or spaces you want documented
  • A love for cozy, candid images

And your house does not need to look like it belongs in a magazine.

I don’t need every room spotless. We can focus on the spaces that have the best light and the parts of your home that actually feel like your family.

Family Photos Outdoors

Outdoor family photos give us a completely different kind of variety.

San Diego has so many beautiful options, from beaches and coastal locations to grassy fields, trails, and other natural settings. Getting outside also gives kids room to move, explore, run, and play.

Outdoor sessions are a great fit if you want:

  • Beautiful natural scenery
  • More variety in your backgrounds
  • Lots of movement and play
  • Beach or sunset photos
  • A little adventure built into your session

I especially love outdoor sessions for families with older babies, toddlers, and kids who don’t want to sit still. We can let them move instead of asking them to hold a pose for very long.

Which One Should You Choose?

Think about the story you want your photos to tell.

If you want to remember what everyday life with your family looked like, an in-home session might be perfect.

If you want to remember an afternoon spent exploring, running through the sand, playing together, or enjoying the beautiful San Diego scenery, an outdoor session may be a better fit.

And you don’t necessarily have to choose one forever.

You could do an in-home newborn session this year and an outdoor family session next year. Or switch between the two as your family grows.

You Can Also Combine Both

If you can’t decide, we can sometimes incorporate both.

Starting at home gives us those intimate, everyday images before heading outside for a change of scenery. This can give you a gallery that feels varied while still telling one complete story.

Ultimately, I don’t want your family photos to feel like an assignment where everyone has to look and behave perfectly.

I want them to feel like your family.

Whether that means barefoot kids running through the backyard, everyone piled onto the couch, or your family laughing together on a San Diego beach, there is no wrong way to document this season.

If you’re trying to decide between family photos at home or outdoors, reach out to me, Shelby, and I’ll help you choose a location and session plan that fits your family. Let’s create photos you’ll actually want to look back on years from now.
