There are few things sweeter than photographing a brand-new family with their very first baby.

Baby Scottie was already a month old when I photographed her newborn session at Opal and Light Studio in Farr West, which meant we got to see something a little different than we often do with brand-new newborns: her beautiful eyes, tiny expressions, and plenty of personality.

And Scottie definitely had some personality.

As a Farr West newborn photographer, I loved getting to document this sweet family’s first days together and all of the little details that made their session feel completely theirs.

A First Baby Is Worth Documenting

There is something especially emotional about photographing a first baby.

Everything is new.

The tiny fingers.

The sleepy cuddles.

The way Mom and Dad look at their baby.

The realization that this little person is actually here and is now part of their family.

I loved seeing how excited Scottie’s parents were to have her with them. There is such a special kind of joy that comes with bringing your first baby home, and I wanted their photographs to preserve that feeling.

A One-Month-Old Newborn Session

Scottie was actually about a month old for her session, which gave us a fun opportunity to capture some things you don’t always see in a traditional newborn session.

She spent more time awake, letting us see her eyes and all of her little expressions.

And then there was her fist.

Scottie kept managing to wiggle one hand right out of her wrap and hold it straight up toward the camera like she was making a tiny declaration of independence.

Honestly, it was hilarious.

Those little quirks are exactly why I love photographing babies. Even at one month old, they’re already starting to show us who they are.

The Sweetest Personal Details

Mom brought some really special pieces to incorporate into the session, including a vintage goose stuffed animal and a name banner made from quilted letters.

I loved that these weren’t just random props.

They were personal details chosen specifically for Scottie.

And somehow, they looked like they had always belonged in Opal and Light Studio.

The studio’s cozy, vintage atmosphere complemented everything perfectly, making the entire gallery feel warm, nostalgic, and incredibly cohesive.

It was an aesthetic dream.

Why Personal Details Matter in Newborn Photos

I always encourage parents to bring meaningful items to a newborn session if they have them.

It could be a stuffed animal from your own childhood.

A handmade blanket.

A special outfit.

A name sign.

Something from the nursery.

These little details can become part of the story of your baby’s first photographs.

Years from now, you’ll remember not only what your baby looked like, but the little things that surrounded them when they first came home.
