Layton Family Photos | A Meaningful Session at Art Nord Trailhead

Family photography is about more than getting everyone to look at the camera at the same time. Sometimes the most meaningful photographs come from the personalities, relationships, and seasons of life happening right in front of you.

This Layton family session at Art Nord Trailhead was full of all of those things. From a family with a great teasing dynamic to an adorable granddaughter who brought so much personality to the session, there was plenty to photograph and plenty to love.

A Family Full of Personality

The Layton family was so kind, and I especially loved the way they teased and interacted with each other. That kind of dynamic is one of my favorite things to photograph because it gives me so much more than posed smiles.

Family photos don’t have to feel stiff or overly serious. When everyone is comfortable enough to joke around and be themselves, I can capture the little interactions that make a family feel like a family.

And then there was Carter.

Letting Kids Be Themselves

Carter was absolutely adorable, and I could have followed her around taking pictures all night.

She had so much personality, and some of my favorite images from the session came from simply letting her be herself. Instead of worrying about getting her to pose perfectly, I could follow her lead and photograph the expressions, movement, and little moments that showed exactly who she is.

Those personality-filled photographs are often the ones parents end up loving most.

Kids change so quickly, and photographs that capture their actual personalities are such a valuable part of a family gallery.

Finding the Right Light at Art Nord Trailhead

We also made a small location adjustment during this session that made a big difference.

My first session in this area was too bright on the hill with the mountain backdrop, so we moved into a shaded area with tall grass instead.

I love the versatility of this mountain. Having different pockets of light and scenery means we can adjust when the conditions aren’t quite what we want and still create a beautiful gallery.

Good family photography isn’t always about having perfect conditions. Sometimes it’s about knowing when to change the plan.

The shaded area gave us softer light and a beautiful natural setting, and it ended up being exactly what we needed.

A Family Showing Up for One Another

This family session also carried a deeper meaning for their family.

Kristin is currently going through stage 4 cancer, and her family has been showing up to support her throughout her fight. They even had shirts made specifically to show their support.

At the very end of the session, we took a few family photographs wearing the shirts together.

Those images aren’t just family portraits. They’re a record of a family standing together during a difficult season and making sure Kristin knows she isn’t facing it alone.

That is one of the reasons I love family photography so much. We aren’t only documenting birthdays and vacations and the easy seasons. Sometimes we’re documenting the people who surround us when life is hard, too.

Family Photography That Feels Like Your Family

A meaningful family session doesn’t have to be complicated. Sometimes it’s a little teasing between family members, a granddaughter running around with a personality all her own, tall grass in the evening light, and everyone coming together for a few photographs that mean something much bigger than a posed portrait.

Those are the moments I want to preserve.
