San Diego LDS Missionary and Family Pictures | Poulson Family
As a photographer who specializes in capturing those meaningful moments, one of my absolute favorite types of sessions is shooting San Diego LDS missionary pictures and family pictures in one go. Whether it’s before or after a missionary’s time in the field, this is such a special moment for families to come together and commemorate their loved one’s commitment to service. If you’re planning a session like this in San Diego, you’re in for a treat! The city offers so many beautiful spots, from the beach to the mountains, perfect for capturing these important milestones.
Let’s dive into how we can make the most of your LDS missionary and family session while having fun, creating lasting memories, and making sure everyone looks fabulous!

### Why Combine LDS Missionary Pictures with Family Photos?
If you’re a family with a loved one leaving for (or returning from) their mission, it’s such a beautiful and meaningful way to document both their individual milestone and the love and support of the family. Missionary photos are special—they capture that moment of commitment and excitement as a missionary prepares to serve, but combining them with family pictures makes the entire session even more precious. You get to highlight the bond between the missionary and their family, celebrate their service, and create stunning photos that will be cherished for years to come.
Whether you want to showcase just the missionary in their suit or capture the whole family sharing in the excitement, there’s so much emotion in these moments. It’s a way of freezing time during a significant life event, surrounded by the love and support of the people who care most.

### The Best Locations for LDS Missionary and Family Pictures in San Diego
One of the things I absolutely love about living in San Diego is how many beautiful, diverse locations we have for photos. Whether you’re looking for a coastal vibe, something with greenery, or a bit of architectural elegance, there’s something for every style.
– **San Diego LDS Temple**: A classic choice for any LDS-related photos, and one of my personal favorites. The clean lines of the temple, the beautifully manicured grounds, and the serene atmosphere make this the perfect place for both missionary and family portraits. The temple is a symbol of faith and devotion, making it an ideal backdrop for such an important moment in life.
– **Balboa Park**: If you’re after something a little more whimsical, Balboa Park offers beautiful gardens, grand architecture, and open spaces that can create a variety of moods in your pictures. It’s especially lovely if you want a mix of classic and natural looks.
– **La Jolla Cove**: For those who want a beachy vibe, La Jolla Cove offers some of the most picturesque ocean views in San Diego. The soft golden tones of sunset are magical for capturing portraits, and the natural beauty of the coastline adds such a timeless, serene quality to photos.
– **Sunset Cliffs**: A dramatic, stunning location that makes for jaw-dropping shots. If your family loves the ocean or enjoys more of a rugged, outdoorsy feel, this location is perfect. The cliffs add a bit of adventure to the session and provide a unique backdrop for both individual and family portraits.

### Making Your LDS Missionary Photos Extra Special
The key to great missionary photos is highlighting the individual’s dedication, service, and personality. Before the session, I like to sit down with my clients to get a sense of their missionary’s personality—are they more laid-back or do they have a quirky side? Are there any meaningful items, like a favorite book or a mission map, that could be included in the photos? Incorporating personal touches into your missionary photos will make them feel more authentic and meaningful.
Of course, no missionary session would be complete without a few *portrait-style* shots in their suit or dress, with a strong and confident pose. These images will forever remind them of the commitment they made to serve, whether it’s their first day on the mission or the day they return home.

### Including Family in the Mix
A family session adds that extra layer of emotion to your photos. The love between the missionary and their family is palpable, and I always try to capture those authentic, candid moments. Whether it’s a tight family hug, a shared laugh, or a loving glance between siblings, these are the shots that will be treasured.
As a photographer, I also love to sneak in a few group shots with everyone together, whether that’s all in front of the temple or enjoying the scenery in a more casual, relaxed setting. When you can capture the happiness, love, and excitement on the faces of each family member, it makes the session even more meaningful.

### Tips for a Smooth Missionary and Family Photo Session
1. **Plan Ahead**: Since this is such a significant day, it’s best to plan the session around the missionary’s departure or return. If it’s during their last few days at home, let’s aim to capture the excitement and anticipation of their mission. If it’s after they return, it’s a great way to capture that feeling of accomplishment and reunion!
2. **Coordinate Outfits**: While it’s not necessary for everyone to match perfectly, coordinating your outfits can really elevate the aesthetic of your photos. Neutral colors like whites, creams, blues, and soft pastels tend to photograph beautifully, and they won’t distract from the main subject—your missionary.
3. **Give Yourself Plenty of Time**: Since we’ll be doing both individual shots of the missionary and family portraits, we’ll need time to move between locations and get the best shots. It’s important to stay relaxed and enjoy the process. After all, this is a once-in-a-lifetime moment that deserves to be celebrated!
4. **Expect the Unexpected**: With families, there are always a few unexpected surprises. But that’s what makes family photos so fun! Maybe a little sibling will decide to be silly, or a family member will need to adjust their outfit—don’t stress! I’m here to capture those real moments that show your family’s unique dynamic.
5. **Be Present**: This session is about more than just getting the perfect shot; it’s about making memories together. Let the missionary enjoy the love and support of their family, and I’ll be there to document it all.

### Final Thoughts
Capturing LDS missionary and family photos in San Diego is such an incredible way to preserve a special chapter in your family’s life. It’s an opportunity to celebrate the missionary’s commitment to serve, while also highlighting the unity and love within the family. And whether we’re in front of the San Diego LDS Temple or by the ocean at sunset, it’s guaranteed that these images will be ones you’ll cherish forever.
If you’re getting ready for a missionary send-off or homecoming, I’d love to help capture these precious moments. Let’s create something beautiful that tells your family’s story!
