Tips for Finding a Great Wedding DJ

Planning a wedding can be one of the most exciting things you’ll ever do in your life. It also comes with a lot of decisions. From the photographer to the DJ to the flowers, every little detail matters when it comes to making your big day unforgettable. Everyone wants incredible photos to remember their special day, but how do we create those fun memories that a photographer can capture? A great wedding DJ will do just that. So when it comes to hiring a DJ, here are a few suggestions we have to help you weed through the amateur hobbyists so you can find that professional wedding DJ that is going to help you create the memories you want captured on your wedding dance floor.

Here are some tips to help you out as you are looking for a DJ:

Check their social media accounts:

Social media is a great way to gauge the quality of a DJ’s work. Check out their Instagram, Facebook, and maybe even their tiktok to see photos and videos of their performances. This can help you get a sense of their style and whether or not they’re a good fit for your wedding. Pay attention to what they are trying to tell the world. Is the music in their feeds speaking to you?

Look for confidence:

When scrolling through their socials and their website pay attention to whether or not the DJ is showing their face or their setups and not just showing full dance floors. Good DJ’s have confidence in their setups because they invest not only in their performance but in their gear and in their personal appearance and attire. You want someone who adds to your wedding aesthetics. Good DJ’s care about the details.

Evaluate their communication skills:

When you reach out to a DJ, take note of how they communicate with you. Do they provide a detailed quote or contract? Are they asking you questions about your music? Are they just focused on pricing and gear? Do they have processes that allow you to be able to communicate your music vision?

Consider their efficiency:

Is the DJ offering a single sound system that has to be moved between your ceremony and cocktail hour? Having one system may not be the most efficient way to keep the flow of your wedding timeline. Look for a DJ who has invested the necessary equipment to ensure that the music flows seamlessly from one part of the event to the next.

Consider the ceremony details:

Is there a Lavalier Microphone (Lapel) provided for the ceremony and are they mixing (Equing) the Mic to prevent feedback from happening during the ceremony? Good DJ’s invest not only in good equipment but invest in learning how to make a microphone sound good to prevent sound issues during the ceremony.

Consider their personality:

Your wedding day is a reflection of your personality and style. You want a DJ who can match that and fit in with your friend group. Have a zoom call and connect with the dj. Listen to their mixes.

Think about your budget:

This is always a touchy subject…. right? Of course, the budget is an important consideration when it comes to hiring a DJ. But don’t make the mistake of going for the cheapest option. Remember, you get what you pay for so do your due diligence. Investing a little more in a professional DJ can help you create a unique atmosphere that is truly tailored to you two as a couple.

Tips for Finding a Great Wedding DJ

Last, but not least, ask what their process is:

If they don’t have a process and say something like… ‘I’m easy going, you give me what you want, I’ll just make it happen. I don’t really have a process other than a meeting a week before your wedding.’ RUN! A DJ acts as an Emcee and second to a wedding planner they can make one of the biggest influences on your event. If they don’t have a process, they are not going to pay attention to the details. As an example if they don’t ask who is giving toasts, how are they going to know who to announce? If they don’t ask questions they are not going to give your event the right amount of focus and love you truly want to make your event unforgettable!

‘The Right DJ Makes a difference! I’ve done 200+ weddings personally in my career. These consist of weddings with 40 attendees to my largest to date having over 1000 in attendance. There are a few things that set me apart from my competition. This includes my process, my depth in music research for each wedding couple and my unique background of production. Why is production important? Well we’ve all been to that gig where the feedback from the mic and speakers instantly turned us away from having a good experience. Because I have a background in Audio Visual I’ve bought touring-artist pro-grade equipment to use on stage to let their music be heard. I’m looking to create that live concert feel for you at your wedding.’ – DJ Cam Reeve
