Dress for the Weather
First and foremost, make sure everyone is dressed appropriately for the weather! You may not be able to tell in photos, but everyone will feel it if they’re freezing cold during your shoot. Choose clothing that is warm but also camera-ready: bright colors, layers, and textures will all look great in pictures. Consider having each person wear a different color so that everyone stands out—but try to avoid clashing patterns or logos.
Merge with Nature
Once you’re dressed and ready to go, pick a spot with plenty of nature in the background—trees, shrubs, hillsides—that will provide depth and contrast against your family’s faces. Also look for spots where shadows will fall across the scene; this can create interesting shapes and lines that work well with snowscapes. The more organic elements you can include in your picture, the better!
Don’t Forget Accessories
Accessories can add personality to your family photos as well as keep everyone warm! Scarves, hats, mittens or gloves can all help bring your family portrait together while also keeping hands and ears from getting too chilly. Adding these fun accessories will lend visual interest and texture to your photo while creating a sense of unity among those pictured.
Taking a group photo when it’s cold outside doesn’t have to be stressful! With these tips on hand (and maybe a thermos of hot cocoa!), you should have no problem getting beautiful snowy shots of your whole family this winter season. Keep these reminders close by so that you don’t forget any important details as you plan out your photo session—you’ll thank yourself later when looking back at all those amazing memories!
