If you sell a physical product, you already know how important your photos are.
Before someone buys your product, they want to see it. They want to know what it looks like, what comes in the package, how it works, and what makes it different.
That is where product photography comes in.
I recently got to photograph the full line for Manifest Wellness, a wellness brand focused on magnesium body care. They originally came to us for a trial session, and after seeing the images, they decided they wanted to have their whole line photographed.
That is one of my favorite things about product photography. Once a brand sees what a strong collection of professional images can do for their products, they often realize just how much content they actually need.

What Is Product Photography?
Product photography is professional photography created to showcase a physical product.
The goal is to make the product look appealing while also giving potential customers the information they need to understand what they’re buying.
Product photos can be used on:
- E-commerce websites
- Product listings
- Amazon and other marketplaces
- Social media
- Email marketing
- Advertisements
- Launch campaigns
- Printed marketing materials
A good product gallery gives a brand a collection of images it can use across all of these platforms.
Product Photography Is More Than a White Background
When you hear “product photography,” you might picture a product sitting by itself against a white background.
Those clean images are useful, but they’re only one type of product photography.
Depending on the brand and the product, we might create several different types of images.
Clean product photos show the product clearly and work especially well for online shops.
Lifestyle photos show the product in an environment where a customer might actually use it.
Detail photos highlight packaging, textures, ingredients, labels, or other important features.
Styled photos use props, surfaces, and carefully chosen backgrounds to create a specific visual feeling.
Product-in-use photos demonstrate how the product works in real life.
For a wellness brand like Manifest Wellness, having more than one style of image gives the brand flexibility. Some photos can clearly show the product while others help communicate the overall feeling of the brand.

Why Does Product Photography Matter?
Online shoppers can’t pick up your product.
They can’t feel the packaging, look at the details in person, or hold the product in their hands.
Your photos have to do some of that work for you.
Strong product photography helps customers understand what they’re looking at and gives them confidence in the purchase.
It also helps establish the perceived quality of your brand.
When your product photos feel intentional and professional, your entire online presence feels more cohesive.
How Many Product Photos Do You Need?
There isn’t one magic number that works for every business.
A single product might need several images to show different angles, details, packaging, and uses.
A brand with an entire product line will need even more.
That’s why I love working with brands to create a full photography library instead of treating every product as a completely separate project.
With Manifest Wellness, we started with a trial session. Once they knew they loved the look of the images, we were able to photograph their entire line and create a more complete collection of content.
That makes it much easier for a brand to keep its website, social media, email marketing, and other channels looking consistent.
Where Should Product Photography Take Place?
Product photography doesn’t always require a traditional commercial studio.
For this Manifest Wellness shoot, I photographed the products at my home in Layton, Utah.
The right location depends on the product, the brand’s visual style, and what kinds of images we need to create.
Sometimes a studio is the perfect choice. Other times, a home, outdoor location, or other lifestyle setting gives us exactly what we’re looking for.
The important thing is creating an environment that supports the product rather than distracting from it.
When Should You Book Product Photography?
The best time to photograph your products is before you desperately need the photos.
If you’re launching a new product line, updating your website, preparing for a seasonal campaign, or simply realizing that your current product images are outdated, it’s a good time to start planning.
Having your images ready ahead of time also gives you more flexibility when it comes to marketing.
You can start creating social posts, emails, Pinterest content, ads, and website updates without waiting for another photo session.
Product Photography for All Brands
Whether you have one signature product or an entire line like Manifest Wellness, professional product photography can give you a library of images that works much harder for your business.
I love helping brands figure out what types of photos they actually need and then creating a gallery that gives them plenty of options.
If you’re a product-based brand and you’re ready for photos that make your products look as good online as they do in person, reach out to book a product photography session with me. We can talk through your products, where you’ll use the images, and what we can create together.
You don’t have to know exactly what you need before you book. That’s what I’m here for.
