Why a Maternity Session Makes Such a Meaningful Gift

There are so many things to buy when someone you love is having a baby. But one of my favorite gifts is something they can keep long after the baby arrives: a maternity photography session.

I recently photographed this sweet couple at Farmington Preserve after the mom-to-be’s aunt gifted them a mini session. I had donated the session to the Plain City 4th of July raffle, and her aunt purchased it as a gift for them.

I absolutely loved that idea.

Having a baby is expensive, especially for a young couple. Between preparing for the baby, medical expenses, and all of the things that come with becoming parents, professional photography can sometimes feel like something you have to put off.

That’s why I think gifting a maternity or newborn session can be so meaningful.

A Gift They Can Actually Keep

Baby gifts are wonderful, but so many of them are eventually outgrown, used up, or packed away.

Photos are different.

A maternity session gives a couple the chance to slow down and document who they were right before their family changed forever. Those images become part of their family’s story.

And years from now, their daughter will be able to see how excited her parents were to meet her.

This Baby Girl Is Already So Loved

This couple was so clearly in love, and that was one of my favorite things about photographing them.

You could already see how much love they had for their baby girl before ever meeting her.

There is something so sweet about photographing parents during this in-between season. They’re still a family of two, but they’re already becoming a family of three.

I loved capturing the excitement and tenderness between them. I have a feeling this little girl is going to be very lucky to grow up surrounded by this much love.

Farmington Preserve Was the Perfect Backdrop

We photographed their maternity session at Farmington Preserve, and one of my favorite spots was underneath the weeping willow.

The willow gave the images such a beautiful, moody feeling. The soft, hanging branches created a completely different look from the rest of the preserve and added a little drama without taking away from the couple.

This is one of the reasons I love photographing maternity sessions outdoors. We can use the location to create several different moods within one session.

We don’t need a complicated setup. Sometimes we just need beautiful light, a meaningful connection, and a location with a little variety.

Who Should You Gift a Maternity Session To?

A maternity session makes a thoughtful gift for:

  • A sister or sister-in-law expecting a baby
  • Your daughter or daughter-in-law
  • A close friend who is becoming a mom
  • A young couple expecting their first baby
  • Someone who loves photos but might not prioritize booking them for themselves
  • A family who already has everything they need for the baby

You could also gift a newborn session if the baby has already arrived.

The best part is that you’re giving them something they don’t have to find space for in the nursery.

You’re giving them memories.

You Don’t Have to Wait Until the Baby Arrives

If someone you love is expecting, consider giving them a maternity session as a shower gift, birthday gift, holiday gift, or just because.

It doesn’t have to be an elaborate present.

Sometimes the most meaningful gifts are the ones that give someone an experience and preserve it for them afterward.

This session was a perfect example. An aunt saw an opportunity to give this couple something special, and now they have photographs documenting this little piece of their story before their daughter arrived.

That’s a gift they’ll be able to look back on for years.

Planning a Farmington Maternity Session?

If you’re expecting a baby or looking for a meaningful gift for someone who is, I’d love to help you document this season.

I photograph maternity sessions throughout Farmington and Northern Utah with a focus on natural connection, beautiful light, and images that actually feel like you.

If you’re expecting—or know someone who is—reach out to Cait at Kylee Ann Studios to plan a maternity session or gift one to someone you love.
