Motherhood deserves to be documented. Not just the big milestones, but the everyday season you’re in right now. That’s one of the reasons I love offering Del Mar Mother’s Day mini sessions each year.
This year, I photographed several families during my Mother’s Day minis at one of my favorite spots in North County San Diego: the bluff area above Del Mar Dog Beach. The location was especially beautiful with blooming purple flowers, coastal views, and soft spring light that made every gallery feel bright, fresh, and timeless.
Even though these sessions were short, they captured something incredibly meaningful—moms being present with the people they love most.

Why Del Mar Mother’s Day Mini Sessions Are So Popular
There are countless beautiful locations throughout San Diego, but Del Mar continues to be one of my favorites for spring sessions.
The coastal bluffs offer so much variety without requiring a long walk. Families can enjoy ocean views, seasonal wildflowers, natural greenery, and beautiful open space all within a relatively small area.
The location also photographs beautifully throughout the spring months. The combination of coastal scenery and blooming flowers creates a look that feels distinctly Southern California while still keeping the focus on the people in the photos.
For Mother’s Day sessions especially, that balance is perfect.
The Value of Getting in the Frame
One thing I hear from moms all the time is that they’re usually the one taking the photos.
They have hundreds of pictures of their kids.
Dozens of pictures of their spouse with the kids.
But very few images that include them.
That’s exactly why I love Mother’s Day minis.
These sessions aren’t about perfect outfits or perfectly behaved children. They’re about documenting connection. The hugs, hand-holding, laughter, and little moments that make up this season of motherhood.
Years from now, those are the photographs that matter most.

Why Mini Sessions Work So Well for Families
Many families love mini sessions because they’re quick, simple, and low-stress.
Young children don’t have time to get overwhelmed.
Parents don’t have to plan an entire evening around photos.
And we can still create a beautiful gallery in a short amount of time.
The key isn’t the length of the session. It’s creating an experience where families can relax and enjoy being together.
Some of my favorite images from these Mother’s Day sessions happened in between poses, when moms were simply interacting with their children naturally.
Spring Is One of the Best Times for Family Photos in Del Mar
While Del Mar is beautiful year-round, spring offers something extra special.
The wildflowers add color and texture, the temperatures are comfortable, and the coastal light is soft and flattering. It’s one of the reasons I often recommend spring sessions for families who want a bright, airy gallery.
The purple blooms overlooking Del Mar Dog Beach created the most beautiful backdrop for this year’s sessions, and every family brought their own unique energy to the location.
Preserving the Season You’re In
Motherhood changes quickly.
The baby who wants to be carried eventually wants to run ahead.
The little hand that always reaches for yours eventually grows up.
Photographs allow us to hold onto a small piece of those seasons.
As a photographer serving Del Mar, Encinitas, Carlsbad, La Jolla, and families throughout North County San Diego, I love creating images that help families remember these moments long after they’ve passed.
These Del Mar Mother’s Day mini sessions were such a beautiful reminder that the most meaningful photographs are often the simplest ones.
If you’re thinking about updating your family photos or joining a future Mother’s Day event, I’d love to help you document this season with the people who matter most.
