Commercial Photography vs. Brand Photography: What’s the Difference?

Commercial Photography vs. Brand Photography

If you’ve been looking into photography for your business, you’ve probably come across both commercial photography and brand photography.

They sound similar, and there is definitely some overlap. But they aren’t always used to describe the same thing.

As a commercial photographer, I think of it this way:

Brand photography tells people who you are. Commercial photography helps show them what you sell or do.

Sometimes you need one. Sometimes you need both.

What Is Brand Photography?

Brand photography is focused on the personality and identity behind your business.

These photos might show you working, interacting with customers, using your products, or simply being the person behind the brand.

The goal is to give your audience a better sense of who you are and what your business feels like.

Brand photos are especially useful for:

  • About pages
  • Social media
  • Blog posts
  • Email marketing
  • Personal branding
  • Website content
  • Behind-the-scenes content

If someone visits your website and you want them to understand the people and personality behind the business, brand photography can help tell that story.

What Is Commercial Photography?

Commercial photography is generally more focused on creating images that a business can use to market, advertise, sell, or communicate its products and services.

That could mean photographing a physical product on a clean background, creating lifestyle images showing a product in use, photographing a service, or creating specific images for a marketing campaign.

Commercial photography can include:

  • Product photography
  • Lifestyle product photography
  • E-commerce photography
  • Advertising photography
  • Food photography
  • Packaging photography
  • White background photography
  • Images for catalogs and websites

The final images are often created with a specific business purpose in mind.

So Which One Does Your Business Need?

This is where it gets helpful to think about what you actually need the photos to accomplish.

If you need photos of you, your team, your workspace, or the personality behind your business, brand photography may be what you’re looking for.

If you need photos of your products or services, especially images designed to help you sell them, commercial photography may be the better fit.

And sometimes the answer is both.

A product-based business might need clean product images for its online store while also needing lifestyle images and behind-the-scenes photos for social media.

Those images can work together to create a much more complete library of content.

One Commercial Shoot Can Create a Lot of Content

One of my favorite things about commercial photography is that we can plan a shoot around how your business will actually use the images.

Instead of simply showing up and taking pretty pictures, we can think through your website, product listings, social media, ads, email marketing, launches, and other places your photos will appear.

That might mean creating a variety of images during one session:

Clean images for your website or online store.

Lifestyle images that show your product being used.

Close-up images that highlight important details.

Vertical images for social media and Pinterest.

Wide images with negative space for website banners or advertising.

The goal is to walk away with a collection of images that gives your business options.

You Don’t Have to Choose the Perfect Photography Label

Photography terminology can get confusing, especially because photographers and businesses sometimes use these terms differently.

Instead of getting stuck on whether you need “brand photography” or “commercial photography,” start with a simpler question:

What do you need your photos to do for your business?

Once we know that, we can build the shoot around the answer.

As a commercial photographer at Blush Door Studio, I love helping businesses figure out exactly what they need before we ever pick up a camera. Whether you’re launching a product, updating your website, building a content library, or simply need better images to market your business, reach out to me, Cait, and let’s plan a commercial photography session around your goals.
