As a family photographer, there’s nothing more delightful than capturing a little one’s first birthday with a Davis County cake smash session! When planning a cake smash session, the key is to create a vibe that’s both fun and visually stunning. For this session, the theme was “ONE Happy Dude,” complete with a bright yellow cake, a darling banner, and the cutest little guy! It all screamed happiness! Whether you’re dreaming of something minimalist, rustic, or colorful and bold, I love working with families to design a set that feels uniquely “you.” Pro tip: Matching the cake to the theme adds that chef’s kiss of perfection!

The Main Event: Let Them Eat Cake (And Smash It!)

The cake was a bright yellow delight with fluffy frosting and a fun topper to match the “ONE Happy Dude” theme. The moment we placed it in front of him, his eyes lit up like it was Christmas morning. First, there was a moment of hesitation—a little poke of the frosting, followed by a curious lick. But once he realized how delicious it was, it was game on! Soon, the frosting was everywhere: on his cheeks, in his hair… everywhere!!

These candid moments are pure gold. You can see the curiosity, joy, and even a little mischief in every frame. There’s no “right” or “wrong” way for a baby to approach a cake smash—some are cautious, others go full-on frosting warrior. Either way, the results are priceless!
