Eden Family Photography | Prestwich Family
This summer, I had the pleasure of of capturing Eden Family photography for the Prestwich family during their annual reunion, and what an incredible experience it was! They wanted to update their extended family photos, and it was the perfect opportunity.
We spent a beautiful evening in Eden laughing, chatting, and capturing both posed portraits and candid moments that showed their true personalities. The Prestwich family’s love and connection were so genuine, and Eden’s gorgeous backdrop made everything feel even more magical. Eden is one of my favorite places to shoot. Its natural beauty provides a stunning and versatile backdrop that enhances every photo.
Whether it’s the golden fields, the majestic mountain views, or the serene water of Pineview Reservoir, Eden has a way of bringing out the best in every family I photograph. Sessions like this remind me why I love what I do—documenting the joy, love, and memories that make each family unique.
My Approach to Extended Family Photography
Extended family photography sessions are some of my favorite projects as a photographer. They’re vibrant, dynamic, and filled with opportunities to capture deep, meaningful connections between family members. Whether it’s three generations gathered in a single frame or a candid moment shared between siblings, I approach every session with a blend of creativity, organization, and heart.
A Balance of Structure and Spontaneity
Extended family sessions can feel a little chaotic—after all, there are usually a lot of people involved! My goal is to bring a sense of calm and direction while leaving plenty of room for genuine moments to unfold.
Guided Posing: With large groups, posing is essential to ensure everyone looks their best and feels included. I come prepared with poses that flatter and organize the group, whether it’s a classic family lineup or a more casual arrangement.
Candid Moments: While posed shots are important, I always keep an eye out for candid interactions. The quick hugs, shared laughter, and whispered jokes often turn into the most memorable and cherished photos.
Highlighting Every Relationship
Extended family photography isn’t just about one big group shot (though we’ll absolutely get that iconic image!). It’s about celebrating the many unique relationships within the family.
Small Group Pairings: I love breaking the session down into smaller combinations—grandparents with grandkids, parents with their children, and even siblings together. These smaller groupings capture the intimacy and love within each relationship.
Special Moments with Elders: There’s something so poignant about photographing the family matriarch or patriarch surrounded by their loved ones. I make sure to give extra attention to these cornerstone relationships.
Embracing the Energy
Large family sessions are lively, and I embrace that energy! Instead of aiming for perfection in every shot, I focus on capturing the authentic dynamics of your family. Sometimes the toddler refuses to sit still, or cousins get giggly—and that’s okay. Those moments are just as important as the perfectly posed shots because they reflect the true spirit of your family.
Focus on Connection
At its core, my approach to extended family photography is all about connection. The relationships between family members, the joy of being together, and the love that ties it all together—that’s what I aim to capture.
When you look back at these photos, I want you to feel the warmth and happiness of that day. My goal is to create a gallery of images that don’t just show how your family looked but also reflect who you are as a group.
Extended family photography sessions are an incredible way to preserve the legacy of your family. It’s more than just a photoshoot, it’s a celebration of togetherness.
If you’re ready to capture the beauty, energy, and love of your extended family in Eden, I’d be honored to help tell your story. Let’s create something timeless together!
