This Del Mar Beach family photos session was the sweetest little coastal evening with the cutest young family. Shelby photographed mom, dad, and their one-year-old daughter, and the entire session felt soft, playful, and completely relaxed from beginning to end.
Honestly, Del Mar is one of my favorite locations in San Diego for families with young kids because it gives you that dreamy beach look without feeling overcrowded or stressful.
Between the open shoreline, soft sand, and warm evening light, everything about this session felt light and effortless.

Del Mar Beach family photos with room for toddlers to explore
One reason I love photographing families at Del Mar Beach is because there’s so much usable space. That matters a lot when you’re photographing toddlers.
Little kids almost never want to sit still for long, and honestly, they shouldn’t have to. The best family photos usually happen when kids can move, explore, and interact naturally instead of being forced into stiff poses the whole time.
This little one-year-old was completely in her element. She wandered through the sand, snuggled with her parents, and gave us the sweetest little expressions throughout the evening.
Those in-between moments always end up becoming the heart of the gallery.
Why Del Mar creates such a soft, airy look
Compared to some other San Diego beaches, Del Mar photographs with a really clean and open feel. The cliffs add texture without making the background feel busy, and the shoreline stays wide enough that sessions feel calm even during busier seasons.
The sand here also reflects light beautifully.
That reflection creates the airy, glowy skin tones people usually picture when they think about Southern California beach photography. During golden hour especially, everything softens in the prettiest way.
For this session, the light wrapped around the family so naturally that almost every image felt bright, warm, and dreamy straight out of camera.

Tips for planning Del Mar Beach family photos
One thing I always recommend for Del Mar Beach family photos is leaning into movement instead of perfection.
Walk together. Hold your baby. Let your toddler explore. Sit in the sand. Laugh when things feel chaotic.
That relaxed approach creates photos that feel emotional and genuine instead of overly posed.
For outfits, lighter neutral tones almost always work beautifully at Del Mar because they complement the soft beach colors without competing with the scenery. Barefoot sessions also photograph especially well here because the beach naturally feels relaxed and connected.
Why Del Mar is perfect for young family sessions
Young family sessions are rarely perfectly controlled—and honestly, that’s what makes them so beautiful.
Del Mar Beach gives families enough room to breathe and enough visual simplicity that the focus stays on connection instead of distractions. Parents can relax, toddlers can move, and the session naturally starts feeling more like a fun evening together than a formal photoshoot.
That’s exactly how this session felt.
I photograph Del Mar Beach family photos and family sessions throughout San Diego, La Jolla, Coronado, and North County, and Del Mar continues to be one of my favorite locations for families with young children because it balances scenery and comfort so well.
This sweet little family brought such a calm, joyful energy to the session, and their gallery feels full of warmth, movement, and all those fleeting little moments that make this stage of parenthood so special.
