This Wellsville Hills family pictures session for the Shindelar family honestly deserves an award for persistence alone. We had rescheduled these photos three different times since September because of weather, and every single time something came up.
Rain. Cold. Wind. Scheduling chaos. You name it.
Then we finally landed on a spring date and thought we were safe… only to wake up to snow.
Classic Cache Valley.
But honestly? I’m so glad we still went for it because these pictures turned out absolutely beautiful.

Wellsville Hills family pictures during unpredictable spring weather
Spring in Northern Utah is honestly a gamble every single year. One day feels warm and sunny, and the next day you’re staring at snow-covered hills wondering what happened overnight.
That’s exactly what happened for this session.
We originally planned for a normal spring evening in the Wellsville Hills, but when the storm rolled in, we shifted the session earlier to try to beat the worst of the weather. By the time we started shooting around 4 PM, the skies were already changing and the ground was incredibly muddy.
But somehow, all of those unpredictable conditions ended up making the session feel even more magical.
The clouds added softness to the light, the hills looked extra textured, and the entire gallery ended up with this cozy spring feeling that fits their family perfectly.

Why flexibility matters for outdoor family sessions
One thing I always tell families is that flexibility is everything when planning outdoor sessions in Utah.
The weather here changes fast, especially in places like the Wellsville Hills where storms can roll through with almost no warning. But sometimes those imperfect conditions create the most beautiful photos.
That was definitely true for the Shindelar family.
Even with muddy shoes and cold weather, everyone stayed positive and rolled with the changes. That attitude honestly makes such a huge difference during family sessions because kids pick up on the energy around them.
Instead of stressing about conditions being “perfect,” they focused on being together and having fun with it. And because of that, the photos feel genuine and connected instead of stiff or forced.
Wellsville Hills family pictures with dreamy spring light
The Wellsville Hills are one of my favorite locations in Cache Valley for family photography because they always feel soft, open, and timeless.
Even with snow threatening in the background, this session still had the prettiest muted spring tones. The rolling hills gave us beautiful depth without distracting from the family, and the cloudy skies helped create really even, flattering light throughout the session.
We focused on simple posing, movement, and interaction instead of anything overly complicated. Some of my favorite moments came from the in-between parts of the session when everyone was laughing about the weather and trying not to slip in the mud.
Those moments are usually the ones families treasure most later anyway.
Family photos don’t need perfect conditions to be meaningful
Honestly, sessions like this are such a good reminder that perfect weather does not equal perfect photos.
Connection matters more.
The Shindelar family showed up after months of rescheduling, unpredictable forecasts, and muddy conditions, and they still created a gallery full of warmth and personality.
I photograph Wellsville Hills family pictures and family sessions throughout Logan, Cache Valley, and Northern Utah, and some of my favorite galleries have happened during weather that originally looked “bad” on paper.
This session turned into such a beautiful example of embracing the moment instead of waiting for perfection.
