How Often Should a Business Update Its Brand Photos?

Your brand photos don’t need to be replaced every time you change your Instagram bio or launch a new product.

But they also shouldn’t be sitting on your website for five years while your business has completely changed.

So how often should a business update its brand photos?

For most businesses, I recommend thinking about brand photography as an ongoing content library, not a one-and-done project.

Update Your Brand Photos When Your Business Changes

The most important time to update your photos isn’t necessarily a certain month or year.

It’s when something about your business changes.

You may want new brand photography when you:

  • Launch a new product or collection
  • Change your branding or visual style
  • Move into a new space
  • Add new team members
  • Offer new services
  • Update your website
  • Start targeting a different customer
  • Have a major shift in how you want your business to be perceived

If your current photos no longer represent what customers will experience when they work with you, it’s probably time for an update.

A Year Is a Good Starting Point

For many businesses, once a year is a great rhythm for refreshing brand photography.

That doesn’t mean you have to completely reinvent your visual identity every year.

Instead, an annual shoot can give you a fresh library of images to work with for the next 12 months.

This is especially helpful if you’re consistently creating content for Instagram, Pinterest, email marketing, blogs, ads, or your website.

You don’t want to be pulling from the same ten photos over and over again.

Some Businesses Need New Photos More Often

There isn’t one schedule that works for every business.

A product-based business may need new photos every time it launches a new collection.

A clothing brand might need seasonal photography.

A restaurant may want updated menu and atmosphere photos as offerings change.

A service provider might only need a larger brand shoot every year or two, with smaller sessions in between.

The more frequently your business changes visually, the more frequently your photography needs will probably change, too.

Think Beyond Your Website

One of the biggest mistakes I see businesses make is thinking about brand photography only in terms of their website.

Your photos have a much bigger job than that.

You need images for:

Social media: You need enough variety that your feed doesn’t feel repetitive.

Email: Fresh images can make newsletters and promotions feel much more personal.

Pinterest: Vertical, searchable images can continue sending people to your website long after you publish them.

Blogging: Having a collection of brand images gives you something to work with every time you publish.

Advertising: Different campaigns often need different types of imagery.

When you look at everything your business creates throughout the year, it’s easy to see why one gallery can get used up quickly.

Your Brand Photos Should Grow With Your Business

I recently photographed Playroom Collective, and shoots like this are a good example of why having current, intentional imagery matters.

Your business isn’t static.

The products you sell change. Your offers change. Your audience changes. Your business gets bigger. Your goals shift.

Your photography should be able to change with you.

That doesn’t mean throwing out every photo you’ve ever taken. It means intentionally adding new images to your library so your visual content continues to reflect where your business is now.

You Don’t Always Need a Huge Brand Shoot

Updating your photos doesn’t have to mean starting from scratch.

Sometimes you need a full commercial photography session with a variety of products, locations, people and setups.

Other times, you just need a smaller shoot to fill a specific gap.

Maybe you need new website photos.

Maybe you have a new product.

Maybe your team has changed.

Maybe you’re simply tired of using the same images from three years ago.

Knowing what you actually need before you schedule your photographer can help you get more useful images without creating a much bigger project than necessary.

Build a Photography Rhythm That Works for You

Instead of waiting until you completely run out of usable photos, look at your content calendar and your business plans.

Are you launching something new?

Updating your website?

Planning a big marketing push?

Entering a new season?

Those are great times to schedule photography.

For many businesses, an annual brand shoot plus smaller sessions for launches or major changes is a practical rhythm.

The goal is to always have a current collection of images that makes it easy to show up online.

If your business has changed but your photos haven’t, reach out to me, McKayla, and let’s plan a commercial photography session that gives you fresh, on-brand images you can actually use across your marketing.
