Marketing Faux Pas + New Name Who Dis?
A Journey to Clarity, Coaching, and Scaling Your Photography Business
Hello, everyone! I’m so excited to be back on CEO Photog Club after some time away, and I want to share a little about where I’ve been and where I’m heading. Recently, I had the opportunity to attend a business retreat in Phoenix, and it helped me gain the clarity I’ve been searching for. Through this experience, I reconnected with my passion for photography coaching and honed in on supporting photographers specifically.
Rediscovering My Path
As some of you may know, I’ve been in the photography coaching space for years. I’ve hosted retreats, taught courses, and mentored photographers on how to build and scale their businesses. However, like many entrepreneurs, I reached a point where I felt a bit lost. Balancing my roles as a business owner, educator, and coach sometimes left me feeling stretched thin. This retreat gave me the opportunity to reflect on what truly brings me fulfillment and how I can make the biggest impact.
I realized that my heart is in helping photographers—those who want to grow, scale, and break free from burnout. I want to guide them in building sustainable, profitable businesses they love. So, with this renewed focus, I’m diving back into the photography coaching space, and I’m more excited than ever to share what I’ve learned over the years. Here are a few marketing faux pas to avoid, specifically on Instagram.
Common Marketing Missteps
One thing I love sharing with photographers is how to market themselves effectively.
- Avoid Sharing Editing Queues Online: Posting about your backlog of editing might make potential clients hesitant to book with you. Instead of listing out your editing queue, try sharing sneak peeks and expressing excitement about your current projects. This conveys that you’re busy in a positive way and eager to work with new clients.Make sure you are clear and upfront about your turnaround time when client books, and after their session so you don’t have to use Instagram to keep them updated on the status.
- Reframe Burnout as Gratitude: It’s normal to feel overwhelmed during busy seasons, but venting about burnout on a client-facing account can discourage bookings. If you’re feeling the strain, try reframing your message to show gratitude for the full schedule and the opportunity to work with amazing clients. This positive spin will keep clients interested in booking with you, rather than worrying about adding to your workload.
- Focus on Strengths, Not Trends: If there are photography trends that aren’t your style, try not to bash them publicly. Instead, highlight your unique strengths and what makes your work stand out. This allows you to attract clients who appreciate your particular style, without inadvertently alienating those who might be interested in trendy looks.
- Use Instagram to Drive Email Sign-Ups: Rather than relying on Instagram for booking clients, use it to build your email list. Once clients are on your list, you can send exclusive booking opportunities directly to them, simplifying the process for you and ensuring your calendar fills up faster.
Announcing My New Mastermind: A Year-Long Journey to Scaling Your Photography Business
The retreat also gave me the space to envision a new project: a year-long mastermind designed specifically for photographers ready to take their businesses to the next level. I’ll be guiding a small group of high-level photographers, helping them grow, scale, and diversify their income. Together, we’ll work on systems that bring structure to your business, helping you build a supportive team, create a fulfilling work-life balance, and avoid burnout.
This mastermind is for those who are tired of juggling endless editing, struggling to keep up with client demands, and feeling isolated. We’ll be working together on proven strategies for scaling your business and achieving financial growth, while also building community and accountability. I’m excited to share my insights from over a decade in the industry and help you transform your business.
