Tips for Better Photography

You decided to follow your passion and start a photography business or hobby, but your pictures aren’t improving, all your sessions are free sessions and you can’t get your name out to anyone besides your family. Well, I have some tips for you on how to become a better photographer that helped me start Kylee Ann Photography and get where I am today. These are my favorite tips for better photography to improve your skills FAST!

PRACTICE

The talent does not come overnight. It takes practice, practice and more practice. Even six years later, I am learning new techniques and improving with each session. The number one way to get better is just to do it! I learn so much from playing around with my camera at different settings and in different scenes. If you want to improve, take your camera with you everywhere you go. Use it.

GET EDUCATED

Just because you didn’t go to school for photography doesn’t mean you can’t get an education in photography! We strongly believe in investing back into your business.

favorite photography books:

posing guides  (found in the Nitty Gritty Class)

attend conferences & workshops:

  • WPPI | Las Vegas | March
  • Photo Native | Utah | February
  • Kylee Ann Sleepover | Utah January + Destination each Summer
  • United | Arizona | November

COLLABORATE

The third way I got better at photography was collaborating with other photographers. It doesn’t matter if they have more skill or experience or less skill or experience; I always learn something new!!! Each photographer brings a new perspective, different technique and unique style to the group.

  1. Find a group locally AND online to collaborate with. Join our Facebook Group!
  2. Use a more experienced photographer as your mentor! Look for a business model or photography style that you love, and ask if they offer mentoring sessions.

Collaborating and sharing shoots or knowledge with other photographers is different than copying. Don’t try to be someone you are not. Be unique, be yourself. It’ll help you go further.
