Tony Grove is one of those places that makes family photographs feel special almost immediately. The mountain scenery, towering trees, and peaceful landscape create a beautiful backdrop without needing much else.
I recently photographed the Force family at Tony Grove, and it was such a beautiful setting for documenting their family together.
As a Tony Grove family photographer, I love bringing families into the mountains for photographs that feel natural, timeless, and connected to the place they’re in.

Why I Love Tony Grove for Family Photos
There are so many reasons Tony Grove is one of my favorite family photography locations in Northern Utah.
The scenery gives us variety without needing to travel between multiple locations. We can use the trees, open areas, mountain views, and natural surroundings to create a gallery that feels cohesive while still giving you plenty of different photographs.
It also has that unmistakable mountain feeling that makes these images feel distinctly Utah.
Family Photos That Feel Natural
My goal during a family session isn’t to keep everyone perfectly posed for an hour.
I’ll absolutely make sure we get the classic family portrait—the one where everyone is together and looking at the camera.
But I also want to photograph the things happening in between.
A child leaning into Mom.
Siblings laughing together.
Parents snuggling their kids.
Everyone walking together through the trees.
Those moments are often the photographs that end up meaning the most because they feel like your family.
Letting the Location Be Part of the Story
One of my favorite things about photographing families at Tony Grove is that the landscape can become part of the story.
Instead of using a plain backdrop, we’re surrounded by mountains, trees, and the natural beauty of Logan Canyon.
That gives your photographs a sense of place.
Years from now, you’ll be able to look at the images and remember not only what your family looked like during that season, but where you were together.

What to Wear for Tony Grove Family Photos
Mountain locations tend to photograph beautifully with colors that complement the landscape.
Think soft neutrals, creams, warm browns, muted greens, blues, and other earthy tones.
You don’t need everyone to match. In fact, I prefer when families coordinate rather than wear identical outfits.
Textures and layers can also add visual interest, especially in a mountain setting.
Most importantly, choose clothing that allows your family to move comfortably. The more comfortable everyone is, the easier it is to relax in front of the camera.
More Than One Family Portrait
One of the biggest benefits of an outdoor family session is the variety we can create.
We’ll photograph everyone together, but I also like to break the family into smaller combinations.
Parents with their children.
Siblings together.
Individual portraits.
Candid interactions.
That way, when you receive your gallery, you have more than one version of the same family photograph.
You have a collection that actually tells the story of your family.
