Some newborn sessions go exactly according to plan. Others require a little creativity, teamwork, and one very talented dad.
The Johns family’s newborn session at Light Loft Studio in Layton was definitely the second kind—and it turned out so sweet.
Baby Asher was tiny, adorable, and very clear about his opinions on being wrapped and posed. Thankfully, his two older siblings were completely obsessed with him, and Dad had a very specific trick that could calm him down whenever we needed it.
As a Layton newborn photographer, I loved getting to document this family as they welcomed their newest little member.

Two Big Siblings Who Were Over the Moon
Asher’s older siblings are 10 and 7, and they were absolutely thrilled to have a baby in the family.
They were eager to hold him, kiss him, and make sure we captured all of those sweet sibling moments.
At one point, one of them even called out, “Cait, will you get a picture over here of me kissing his head?”
Of course I will.
Those are exactly the kinds of moments I love capturing during newborn sessions. They’re genuine, they’re sweet, and they show just how excited these kids were to become big siblings.
When Baby Has Other Plans
Asher wasn’t particularly interested in our plans for his newborn portraits.
He did not want to be wrapped.
He did not want to be posed.
And he definitely wasn’t going to make it easy for us.
But that’s completely okay.
Newborn photography isn’t about forcing a baby into a perfect pose. It’s about working with the baby in front of us and finding ways to create beautiful images while keeping everyone comfortable.
And that’s where Dad’s superpower came in.

Dad’s Newborn-Soothing Superpower
Dad had a very specific way of holding Asher along his arm and bouncing him that calmed him almost immediately.
So we made a system.
We would get Asher wrapped and ready, Dad would head just outside the studio and bounce him until he was calm, and then he’d hurry back in so we could grab a few photographs before repeating the process.
It took some teamwork, but it worked.
Dad was absolutely our hero that day.
And honestly, I love that the story behind these photographs is part of what makes them special.
Newborn Photography Doesn’t Have to Be Perfect
One of the biggest things I want parents to know before their newborn session is that your baby doesn’t have to cooperate perfectly.
Babies cry.
They need to eat.
They need to be held.
Sometimes they hate being wrapped.
Sometimes they sleep through everything.
And sometimes Dad has to spend half the session bouncing them outside the studio.
That’s normal.
My job is to work with your baby and your family to create beautiful photographs without expecting the session to unfold perfectly.
Why Studio Newborn Sessions Work So Well
We photographed the Johns family at Light Loft Studio in Layton, which gave us a comfortable, controlled environment for the session.
Studio newborn photography allows us to focus completely on the family without worrying about weather, changing light, or outdoor distractions.
It also gives us a beautiful setting for those tiny newborn details, family portraits, and sibling photographs.
And when your baby needs a little extra bouncing, it’s nice to have a calm space where we can take our time.
A Referral That Means So Much
Shelby found me through her friend Kellie, who I had recently photographed for a poppy mini session.
I absolutely love when clients send their friends my way.
Word of mouth means so much to me because it tells me that someone trusted their experience with me enough to recommend me to someone they love.
Getting to photograph the Johns family because of that connection made this session even more special.
As a Layton newborn photographer, I would love to help you document your baby’s first days with photographs that capture not only how tiny they were, but the people who were already completely in love with them.
If you’re looking for newborn photography in Layton, Davis County, or Northern Utah, I’d love to create a relaxed session that lets your family’s personality—and even your baby’s opinions—be part of the story.
